Marketing – Fresher – B.Tech
I had my SP Jain interview today…
GI 1: 2 panelists: both male, one from finance (20 years of experience in RBI) the other was from quants department (don’t remember the exact name)
Panel details: I was from marketing, 2 finance, 2 IM

  1. Tell me about yourself interestingly without including what we already know (same question to all)
  2. How can you apply electrical and electronics engineering in marketing…
  3. If u are so good I marketing, sell any product from your domain to the girl sitting next to you. (Went very much down the hill as the girl beside me was totally hell-bent on not getting persuaded by me and kept saying “no” to every question of mine. Don’t know why)
  4. what kind of company would you like to work in? (I gave very cliche answers here and one of the interviewers said I not being very exciting and not giving any new answers. I corrected myself and said something better). Later the topic drifted towards how to make pizzas better as one guy had mentioned he loves cooking.
  5. What is the problem if we ask all the customers how much customization they want? (Answered by saying they would take up time and reduce productivity.. he seemed quite satisfied)

After this, we waited for round-2. Our panel was the first panel of the day where all of us were selected for round 2. No elimination.

GI 2: Panelists: 1 male 1 female
Panel details: 2 marketing 2 finance 1 Operations

The whole interview was about our psychometric tests… They had formed a character image about us and pushed us to the extreme to admit us to do something that’s the opposite of what we wrote.

Example: I had said I hate lies… He asked, “do u think marketing people never lie?”.
I said, ” they do but I will choose not to lie”. “But how can you sell without lying”
“Using emotional connections”…

A couple of follow up questions…

They tried to break everyone else too… Me and 2 others didn’t break…
The last two broke. One had said he avoids confrontations but later admitted to confrontation being a better choice… Then the interviewer admitted the interview was a bit pushy… But that was just to know us better.
They wished us the best of lucks and the interview ended. They gave us wearable pen drives.

Personal advice… Don’t budge from what you said no matter how much they push you…

Panel: 2 profs and 4 students( 2 from IM, 1 from Ops and myself from Marketing)

Interview:

Introduce Yourself, Why MBA, Why SPJIMR. Ye sab kuch nahi tha
😂

So, the interview starts with one of the professors asking about the work ex related stuff to one of the IM guys. And then he shifts his attention towards the second IM guy. And this guy over here had mentioned regarding this app which he created. So the prof asked him to explain it. So this guy explained it beautifully and that resulted in the entire interview to take place on how to make this app successful. They asked me about what marketing strategy which would help this app and similarly everyone was asked to chip in. So 60-70 percent of the interview was about that app.

And then the Ops guy was asked regarding his work ex.

And then I was asked about which marketing campaign I liked in recent times.

Then, the first IM Candidate was asked about her interests.

Second IM guy was asked something related to his app again. I can’t remember what it was.

I was asked about which Company would you like to join after SPJIMR? Plus whether I knew about the Marketing subjects in the
 curriculum.

And then, the Ops guy was asked to state 3 current challenges in the Supply Chain World.

That was it.

My thoughts: As a fresher, I could see how people are so well structured and were well prepared. I’m sure I won’t get through but hope to give my best  for the rest of the calls. Hope this helps.

Btw the interview was extremely chilled. Even I had a few nerves before the start, but as soon as the interview started it was absolutely fine.”

*Interview experience*

Panel: 2 marketing faculty, P1 and P2

Students: Me and 3 others, total 4 applicants.

S1) 1 girl had 1.5 work ex in Deloitte
S2) 1 guy had 1.5 years work ex in ZS Associates as an Analyst
Me, BTech final year, fresher

S4) Another guy was a B.Com Fresher

P1: Tell us something about yourself, bounced to everyone. Was fine

P1 to S1: Which company’s marketing campaign do you like?

S1: Coco Cola.

The next 15 minutes we were discussing about Coco Cola, their STP, relating their 4Ps, open questions we all answered. They asked a lot of follow up questions, they wanted us to figure out its USP, and how Coco Cola was keeping up with its competitors. Each one of us pitched in but the panel was not convinced. Finally asked the same question to S2.

S2 spoke about Cred being his favourite. They asked about Cred’s business model. We all gave some points, again they were not very convinced but moved on.

P1 to S1: Why marketing, bounced to S2.

Next P2 took over, went through my CV, randomly picked up 2  certificates that I had mentioned and asked me what they were about ( One was a Microsoft Python Programming Certification, and other was on ethical hacking). Next he asked me to explain any one publication that I had written in my CV. Told, he was convinced.

After this P2 looked up S4’s Part B form, in which he had mentioned about him being a gym enthusiast. P2 asked him to come up with a marketing plan if he had to set up a gym in his area. Gave him 5-10 minutes to think through

Meanwhile S1 and S2 were *thoroughly* questioned about their work ex, their roles, competitors. This went on for about 10 minutes.

Lastly S4 was asked to explain his plan, he ended up contradicting himself, spoke generic stuff and the panel was not happy. This was the last question, took 50 minutes in all.

Result: Me and S2 made it through the next round

 *GI2* :

This felt like a normal discussion among friends.

Again, me and 3 different people. Say me, and G1, G2, G3

Panel: P1 and P2

P1: Tell us something not in your resume or Part A/Part B. Bounced to everyone.

G1 said that he introspects a lot. Panel asked him as to what results or insights he got through introspection.

P1 to G2(a girl): What’s your opinion about Gender Diversity in B Schools?

G2 kept beating around the bush, P1 asked for her opinion multiple times, but she was talking generic stuff about why B schools give gender diversity points. Finally P1 cut her off while she was speaking.

Next, P1 asked me about what I could learn from animals. Spoke about unity and loyalty. Then P1 asked me why loyalty is lacking in humans nowadays. Answered and he looked somewhat convinced

Then, P1 asked G3 about football, his favourite footballer, why, and what we can learn from football as a game.

Then P2 asked just one question – where we would take P2 if she comes to our city. Question bounced to everyone. We all told, went fine, they were convinced. That’s it.

GI2 ended in just 15 minutes.

Tips:

1) Go through your CV/ résumé thoroughly, in addition to your Part B form, be prepared to answer any small thing from CV.

2) Answer *to the point* only, don’t speak for too much time.

Asked about whatever I had mentioned in the intro,
Asked what did I do before joining amadeus.

IM3 – she was questioned after IM2 and interview kind of drifted towards security because she was working on it.

I was questioned after IM2

And all IMs were cross questioned heavily on their work ex and everything they said.

The interview may have lasted more than an hour but the major chuck was taken by the 3 IM students and cross questioning on them about work ex and stuff.
For marketing they asked about the work ex and follow up ques but deep questions into marketing research and branding, even some of the terms were new to me also.
Moral: read thoroughly if you say a major term, in my case market research, irrespective of specialisation. On a bad day ques may come altogether on this. keep your intro so good that they question you first..
Didn’t make it to GI2.
All the best to others 👍🏻

Questions completely revolved around work-ex for everyone.
Introduce yourself and why they give that specialization as preference was asked to everyone. Then follow-ups…

WAT : what is worst regret, not trying something or making a mistake ?
4 members (2 Marketing, 2 finance)
2 panelists
About 1 hr interview.
Asked to introduce in 1 min,why MBA, Asked me what I do and asked how will you use your reports for marketing, explain some marketing strategies… Panelist was not convinced. Had discussion about apple TV and surf excel.Asked about Career goals.

I couldn’t clear round 1. My tip would be to be prepared for unexpected questions and answer after thinking. It’s okay if you don’t know but try not to beat around the bush.

Best of luck 👍

WAT: If you would like to live in one country forever, which country would it be and why?

G1: 3 candidates [2 IM (including me) and 1 Fin] ~ 50mins
Panel: Prof. Amit Jain and Prof. Shailaja Jha

1) General Intro – focus on what you would like us to know. (Could be anything in/out of the form)
They asked me about my extra-curricular activities and one follow-up question on it.
2) Why MBA?
3) Lots of questions about my work ex. They seemed to be interested in my company and work. My company provides a cloud-based contact center solution.
4) Some basic questions on cloud. [as I work on it]
a. What is AWS S3 and how is it different from a database?
b. How would you provide security in S3?
c. What other AWS services do your company and you work on?
d. What projects you worked upon?
5) Competitors of your company?
6) How would you convince me to choose your product?
7) Why NoSQL database is not widely accepted for transactions? [passed on to me from another IM guy. TBH, I have no clue and they agreed upon me guessing it.]
The panelist had a big smile on her face and later found that my answer was correct.
8) Have you done anything to explore technology in your life? Seemed very impressed with my answer.
All three of us made it into round 2. For IM, no questions on the latest technologies, the whole interview was upon work experience.

G2: 3 candidates [all IM] ~ 45 mins

1) Intro something not mentioned in the form.
2) If you and your parents reverse roles for a week, how would that week be?
3) If I were your child and say your parenting is boring, what is your reaction?
4) Should daily wage workers use phonepe, gpay etc… How would it benefit them?
5) Why Paytm stock is falling? Can I say it is targeted panic in the market?
6) As petrol and diesel prices are increasing, how should daily wage workers commute?
Overall, both the interviews were chill. I observed them helping as well.
One suggestion would be to pay attention to the questions asked, what other candidates are saying, and just be yourself. All the best 👍
