GRE General Test Format

Section #Task / Questions Time
Analytical Writing 1 essay task 30 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning Section 1 12 questions 21 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning Section 2 15 questions 26 minutes
Verbal Reasoning Section 1 12 questions 18 minutes
Verbal Reasoning Section 2 15 questions 23 minutes

ETS reports GRE General Test scores for three sections: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning each score between 130 and 170 in 1-point increments, while Analytical Writing scores range from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. If you skip all questions in a section, ETS will assign a No Score (NS) for that section. You’ll typically find your official scores in your ETS account 8–10 days after your test, and ETS will notify you by email when they are ready. At the same time, ETS sends an official Institution Score Report to the recipients you selected on test day.

Your official Test-taker Score Report in your ETS account shows your contact details, date of birth, gender, intended graduate major, test dates, GRE scores with percentile ranks, score recipients, and a five-year history of reported scores. You can print this report for your personal records if needed.

Institutions you select receive an official report with your contact information, demographic details, intended graduate major, the test dates and scores you choose to report via ScoreSelect®, and the related percentile ranks. These reports exclude information about other recipients, scores you withheld, or other GRE tests you’ve taken. ETS also shares photos and essay responses from selected test administrations within your five-year reportable history through the ETS® Data Manager. Your GRE scores remain valid and reportable for five years from the test date.

When to Take the GRE?

Planning when to take the GRE plays a vital role in your graduate school journey. Whether you’re an undergraduate or a working professional, scheduling the GRE at the right time can boost your chances of a successful application.

If You are an Undergraduate Student
Take the GRE during your pre-final year, usually the third year of a four-year program. This timing helps you avoid the heavy academic workload of your final year and gives you a head start on applications. In India, aim to take the GRE before September of your final year to apply early to international universities, which often open applications from October to January. Early testing increases your chances for scholarships and assistantships and allows time for retakes if needed without delaying your application.

If You are a Working Professional
Plan to complete the GRE two to three months before starting your university applications, generally about 15 months before your intended master’s program start date. For example, targeting a Fall 2026 intake means taking the GRE by June or July 2025. This schedule gives you ample time to focus on other application components like your statement of purpose, recommendations, and transcripts. It also provides flexibility to retake the GRE if necessary, without rushing your overall preparation.

When Should you Begin GRE Preparation?

Start preparing for the GRE about five to six months before your planned test date. This timeline lets you study steadily, get familiar with the exam format, and improve your skills in both Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning. Beginning early helps you build a consistent study routine, absorb concepts thoroughly, and avoid last-minute stress.

If you struggle with math or English, start even sooner. Strengthening foundational skills like algebra, geometry, vocabulary, or reading comprehension early allows you to progress smoothly to advanced GRE practice. This approach lets you study at a manageable pace instead of cramming large amounts of material at the last minute.

Preparing well ahead reduces anxiety, lets you take full-length practice tests, review errors carefully, and fine-tune your strategies. Starting early also provides flexibility, if personal or academic interruptions arise, you’ll have enough time to recover without hurting your performance. In short, beginning your GRE prep early helps you master the exam confidently and achieve your target score.
