Structure of GMAT by GMAC

Section Question Time
Quantitative Reasoning 21 Questions 45 Minutes
Verbal Reasoning 23 Questions 45 Minutes
Data Insights 20 Questions 45 Minutes

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) uses a computer-adaptive format, adjusting question difficulty in real-time based on your performance. As you move through the test, it presents harder questions when you answer correctly and easier ones when you answer incorrectly. This adaptive system helps the test measure your ability level more precisely.

GMAT scores are reported across four sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights, and Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections are each scored on a scale of 6-90, contributing to a Total Score ranging from 205 to 805 in 10 point increments. The Data Insights section is scored on a separate scale of 60-90, and the AWA section is scored on a scale of 0-6 in half-point increments. If a section is left unanswered, a No Score (NS) will be reported for that measure.

Official GMAT scores are typically available within 3-5 business days after your test date. You’ll receive an email notification once your scores are ready in your GMAC account, and at the same time, GMAC will send your official score reports to the business schools you selected on test day.

Your official GMAT Score Report includes your contact details, demographic information, test date, section-wise scores with percentile ranks, and the list of score recipients. While this report is intended for personal use, you can download and print a copy if needed. The version sent to institutions includes the scores you’ve chosen to share using Score Sending options, without revealing schools you’ve applied to or scores you chose not to report. GMAT scores are valid for five years from the date of your exam.

At GradSquare, our live online GMAT coaching includes personalized guidance to help you interpret your official scores and use them strategically for MBA admissions. Whether you’re preparing through group sessions or one-on-one mentoring, our experts will help you understand how your GMAT results fit into your academic and career goals.

Best Time to Take the GMAT

Choosing the right time to take the GMAT is a critical step in planning your MBA or business master’s application journey. Whether you’re a current undergraduate student or a working professional, timing your GMAT strategically can significantly enhance your chances of success in the admissions process.

If you are an Undergraduate Student

For students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree and aiming for a Management Program abroad, the best time to take the GMAT is typically during your pre-final year, often the third year in a four-year program. Taking the exam at this stage helps you avoid the academic and project-related pressures of your final year, while giving you an early start on the admissions process.

In the context of the Indian academic calendar, it’s advisable to take the GMAT before September of your final year. This allows you to be ready for Round 1 or Round 2 applications, which many top business schools open between September and January for the next year’s intake. Applying early not only ensures you meet all deadlines comfortably, but it also improves your chances of securing scholarships, assistantships, or fellowships, which are often awarded on a rolling or first come, first served basis. Taking the GMAT early also provides flexibility to retake the exam if needed, without disrupting your overall application timeline.

If you are a Working Professional

If you are a working professional planning to pursue an MBA or master’s in management, it’s essential to allocate enough time for GMAT preparation and application planning. Ideally, you should aim to complete the GMAT at least 2 – 3 months before you begin your application submissions, which means taking the test 12 – 15 months before your intended program start date.

For instance, if you are targeting a Fall 2026 intake, taking the GMAT by June or July 2025 will give you ample time to focus on key parts of your application, such as crafting a strong Statement of Purpose (SOP), arranging letters of recommendation, gathering academic transcripts, and identifying the right schools and programs. Planning early also ensures you have room to retake the GMAT, if necessary, without compromising the rest of your application timeline.

When to Start Live Online GMAT Coaching?

The ideal time to begin preparing for the GMAT Examination is about five to six months before your planned test date. This preparation period allows you to study systematically, become familiar with the exam format, and build strength across the Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights, and Analytical Writing sections. Starting early helps you establish a consistent study routine, deeply understand key concepts, and avoid last-minute pressure.

If you find certain areas challenging such as quantitative problem-solving or verbal reasoning skills, it’s especially important to start even earlier. For those needing to improve foundational topics like algebra, geometry, critical reasoning, or reading comprehension, an early start provides ample time to reinforce these basics before progressing to advanced GMAT material. This approach supports a steady, manageable pace rather than trying to cram a large amount of content in a short time.

Preparing well in advance also reduces anxiety as the exam date nears, allowing you to include full-length practice tests, analyze your mistakes thoroughly, and fine-tune your test-taking strategies. Moreover, starting early gives you the flexibility to accommodate any unexpected personal or professional commitments without derailing your preparation. In short, beginning your GMAT prep early is essential to building confidence and maximizing your chances of achieving a top score.
