The Structure of GRE General Test

Section #Task / Questions Time
Analytical Writing 1 essay task 30 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning Section 1 12 questions 21 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning Section 2 15 questions 26 minutes
Verbal Reasoning Section 1 12 questions 18 minutes
Verbal Reasoning Section 2 15 questions 23 minutes

GRE General Test scores are reported for three sections: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored on a scale of 130–170 in 1-point increments, while Analytical Writing is scored on a scale of 0–6 in half-point increments. If no questions are answered in a specific section, a No Score (NS) will be reported for that measure. Official scores are typically available in your ETS account 8–10 days after your test date, and you will receive an email notification when they are ready. At that time, ETS will also send an official Institution Score Report to the score recipients you designated on test day.

Your official Test-taker Score Report, accessible through your ETS account, includes your contact information, date of birth, gender, intended graduate major, test date(s), GRE scores with percentile ranks, a list of score recipients, and a cumulative record of scores reported in the past five years. While this report is intended for your personal records, you may print a paper copy if needed.

Institutions you choose to receive your scores will get an official report that includes your contact details, demographic information, intended graduate major, the test dates and scores you’ve chosen to report using the ScoreSelect® option, and the associated percentile ranks. These reports do not include information about other score recipients, scores you chose not to report, or whether you’ve taken other GRE tests. Additionally, photos and essay responses from selected test administrations within your five-year reportable history will be included in the score record shared with institutions via the ETS® Data Manager. GRE scores are valid and reportable for five years from your test date.

Best Time to Take the GRE

Choosing the right time to take the GRE is a crucial step in planning your graduate school journey. Whether you are a current undergraduate student or a working professional, taking the GRE at the right time can significantly improve your chances of success in the application process.

If you are an Undergraduate Student

For students currently pursuing their undergraduate studies and planning to apply for a master’s program, the most suitable time to take the GRE is during the pre-final year of your course—typically the third year in a four-year program. Taking the exam at this stage allows you to avoid the heavy academic and project-related workload that often comes during the final year. It also gives you a head start on the application process.

In the context of the Indian academic calendar, this means that students should aim to take the GRE before September of their final year. Doing so positions you well to apply early to international Universities, many of which open their applications between October and January for the following year’s intake. Applying early not only ensures that you meet all deadlines comfortably but also increases your chances of being considered for scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships, which are often awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Moreover, writing the GRE early gives you the flexibility to retake the test if needed, without jeopardizing your application timeline.

If you are a Working Professional

For professionals who have already completed their undergraduate degree and are planning to return to academics, it is important to build in sufficient time for both preparation and the application process. Ideally, you should complete your GRE at least two to three months before you plan to start applying to Universities. This generally means taking the GRE about fifteen months before the date you intend to begin your master’s program.

For example, if you are aiming for a Fall 2026 intake, taking the GRE by June or July 2025 would give you ample time to focus on the rest of your application components. These include writing a compelling statement of purpose, arranging letters of recommendation, gathering transcripts, and researching suitable programs. Planning your GRE this far in advance also leaves room to retake the exam if you are not satisfied with your initial score, without putting undue pressure on the rest of your preparation timeline.

When to Start GRE Preparation?

The ideal time to begin preparing for the GRE is approximately five to six months before your intended test date. This preparation window allows you to study methodically, build familiarity with the exam structure, and strengthen your performance in both the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections. Starting early also gives you enough time to adapt to a consistent study routine, absorb concepts more deeply, and avoid last-minute stress.

For students who feel less confident in their mathematical abilities or need to improve their English language proficiency, it is especially important to start even earlier. If your foundational skills are weak, such as basic algebra, geometry, vocabulary, or reading comprehension, an early start provides the opportunity to rebuild these core areas before moving on to advanced-level GRE practice. It allows for a steady and manageable pace of study, rather than cramming large volumes of material in a short period of time.

Preparing well in advance not only reduces anxiety as the test date approaches but also enables you to incorporate full-length practice tests, review your mistakes thoroughly, and refine your test-taking strategies. Additionally, an early start gives you flexibility, if you encounter personal or academic interruptions, you will still have ample time to get back on track without compromising your performance. In short, early preparation is key to mastering the GRE with confidence and reaching your target score.
