NMAT Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Cutoffs

Preparing for the NMAT by GMAC is a crucial step for MBA aspirants aiming for not only NMIMS Mumbai but also other top b-schools like XIMB, IFMR, KJ Somaiya and TAPMI. NMAT is a computer-based, adaptive test with no negative marking. In this guide, we break down the complete NMAT exam pattern, detailed syllabus, scoring method, and past cut-off trends to help you plan your preparation effectively. Whether you are looking to understand the structure of the test, strengthen each section, or benchmark your target score, this resource will give you the clarity and confidence needed to perform at your best.

Business Schools Accepting NMAT Score

The NMAT is accepted by a wide range of leading business schools in India as well as internationally. Conducted by GMAC, the exam allows candidates to directly send their scores to selected MBA programs while filling out the NMAT application form. Below is a list of some of the top business schools and MBA programs that consider NMAT scores for admission.

NMAT 2025 Exam Pattern

The NMAT examination consists of three sections, Quantitative Skills (QS), Language Skills (LS), and Logical Reasoning (LR), each carrying equal weightage and scored out of 120 marks, making the total score range from a minimum of 36 to a maximum of 360, with at least 12 marks required in every section. Since the NMAT is a computer-adaptive test, every question must be answered, skipping is not permitted, and once you mark an answer you cannot return to it, as the difficulty level of the next question depends on your previous response. Before the test begins, candidates must complete a two-minute NDA declaration, followed by a ten-minute tutorial to get familiar with the test interface. After this, you will be required to choose the order in which you attempt the three sections, and once selected, this sequence cannot be changed during the test. Each section contains 36 questions, although the time limits vary, 52 minutes for QA, 28 minutes for LS, and 40 minutes for LR, making the total test duration 120 minutes. At the end of the examination, your unofficial score will be displayed on the screen, and the official scorecard is typically delivered to your email within 24 hours. No breaks are permitted during the examination, and any issues faced during test delivery must be reported to the support team within 48 hours.

NMAT 2025 is Computer Adaptive Test

NMAT 2025 is conducted as a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT), a format in which the difficulty level of each question adjusts dynamically based on your previous response. If you answer a question correctly, the next one will typically be of the same level or slightly more difficult. Conversely, if you answer incorrectly, the test presents an easier or similar-level question. A key feature of this adaptive format is that there is no negative marking, but once you submit an answer, you cannot revisit or change it. Additionally, leaving a question unanswered results in a penalty, so test-takers must attempt every question before the section ends.

In a computer adaptive setup, your final score does not represent the total number of questions you answered correctly. Instead, it reflects the difficulty level you reached and maintained, making it a measure of your proficiency rather than a raw mark tally. This is why strategy, consistency, and accuracy play a crucial role in maximizing your score in the NMAT 2025 CAT format.

What to Carry for NMAT 2025

Before the NMAT 2025 exam day, ensure that the photograph printed on your admit card is clearly visible and matches the photo on your valid, recent Photo ID. The name mentioned in the “Name on Photo ID Proof” section must exactly match the name on your identification document. If the photograph is unclear or the name does not match, you must contact the NMAT 2025 support team with valid ID proofs to get it corrected, as you will not be allowed to take the exam if the proctor cannot verify your identity. On the day of the exam, arrive at the test centre at least 45 minutes before your scheduled slot, as late entrants will not be allowed to enter once the appointment time has passed. You must carry a printed copy of your admit card for every attempt, and failure to present it will result in denial of entry. Along with the admit card, you must also carry original, non-expired identification documents as specified by the NMAT guidelines, and differently abled candidates must bring any additional documentation advised by the helpdesk. You should retain the admit card until the entire admission process is completed.

NMAT 2025 Sections

NMAT 2025 exam pattern, section-wise syllabus and expected cut-offs explained for MBA aspirants.

Quantitative Skills

The Quantitative Skills section in NMAT 2025 is considered the most challenging of the three sections. It consists of 36 questions, including around five Data Sufficiency questions and typically 2–3 Data Interpretation sets, each containing four questions. The remaining 19–23 questions are multiple-choice, with nearly 40% coming from arithmetic topics. This section also has the longest time limit at 52 minutes, yet completing all questions within this time frame remains difficult for most test-takers. Geometry questions are not asked in NMAT examination.

Language Skills

The Language Skills section of NMAT 2025 is generally considered the easiest of the three sections. It includes 36 questions, featuring three reading comprehension passages of roughly 400 words each, with four questions per passage. The remaining questions cover Grammar (error spotting and prepositions), contextual vocabulary, analogies, parajumbles, and sentence completion. Although this section has the shortest time limit—just 28 minutes—it remains highly scoring compared to the other sections in the NMAT 2025 exam.

Logical Reasoning

The Logical Reasoning section of NMAT 2025 is heavily focused on critical reasoning. The section contains 36 questions, of which around 20 are critical reasoning based. The remaining questions cover a mix of topics such as Venn Diagrams, Set Theory, Input–Output, Coding–Decoding, Puzzles, Analytical Reasoning, Syllogisms, Family Tree, and Directions. Completing this section within the allotted 40 minutes is challenging, and strong performance in the critical reasoning questions is essential for cracking the NMAT 2025 LR section.

NMAT Historical Cutoffs

The NMAT 2024 cutoff for NMIMS marked a major shift compared to previous admission cycles. Unlike earlier years, the NMAT 2024 cutoff was applied as an open cutoff across all campuses, meaning that any candidate scoring an overall 209 with sectional scores of 62 or above was invited for the interview round. This open-format NMAT 2024 cutoff represented a departure from the traditional campus-specific cutoffs that NMIMS followed for years.

Another significant change was the reduction of the NMAT exam weightage to just 20%, which made the NMAT 2024 cutoff far less decisive in the overall selection process. As a result, performance in the subsequent evaluation stages carried much greater importance than before.

Given this context, the NMAT 2024 cutoff serves as an important reference point when analysing how NMIMS may structure its selection criteria in the coming years. Below are the NMAT cutoffs for NMIMS Mumbai for the four years preceding this shift.

NMAT 2025 Cutoffs

NMIMS will announce an open cutoff for all campuses for the NMAT 2025 admissions cycle. The NMAT 2025 cutoffs will remain similar to last year, with an overall score requirement in the range of 209–210 and sectional cutoffs of approximately 62–63 marks.

However, if NMIMS decides to revert to campus-specific cutoffs instead of a common open cutoff, candidates should aim for higher scores, especially for NMIMS Mumbai, which historically has the most competitive profile. In such a scenario, the NMAT 2025 cutoffs for NMIMS Mumbai can be expected to align with previous high-range benchmarks, making a strong overall score essential for securing an interview call.

Below is an indicative range of NMAT 2025 cutoffs that would generally be considered competitive for NMIMS Mumbai if separate cutoffs are reinstated.

NMAT 2025 Cutoffs for Other B-schools

Apart from NMIMS, several other B-schools also prescribe their own NMAT cutoffs for shortlisting candidates. These cutoffs generally show limited variation from year to year, as most institutes maintain a consistent benchmark based on past applicant quality and intake requirements. To help you understand the competitive landscape beyond NMIMS, here is an indicative range of the expected NMAT cutoffs for other leading B-schools that accept NMAT scores.

How Many Times Should I Attempt NMAT 2025

You can appear for the NMAT 2025 exam up to three times, but it’s important to note that not all colleges accept the best of three attempts. For instance, NMIMS considers only the first attempt score for all its programs. Therefore, before scheduling multiple attempts, you should clearly understand which colleges you plan to apply to and whether they evaluate only the first attempt or the best attempt. Below is a list of colleges and the number of attempts they consider in their selection process.

Our Student Speaks

Happy to share that I had a wonderful time at Gradsquare preparing for the CAT exam and GDPI process. As someone who was entirely new to this entire process, I was fortunate to have had such wonderful mentors at Gradsquare who guided me through each and every step of the way. Mentors at Gradsquare helped me identify my weaknesses and helped me find my own strategy that was best suited for my strengths. What stood out for me was Gradsquare's approach which was different from the conventional approach of other coaching centres of using long hours to conduct classes, which in my opinion really doesn't help much, however they never hesitated to take long hours to clear our doubts which according to me was the key instrument in helping me succeed. Also, the Gradsquare portal is super easy to handle and it really makes your prep easy to assess and follow. I wholeheartedly endorse Gradsquare for anyone who is willing to give your best shot at converting a top B-School.

FAQ's About NMAT 2025

What is NMAT by GMAC?
NMAT is a computer-adaptive, computer-based MBA entrance test conducted by GMAC. It has three sections — Quantitative Skills (QS), Language Skills (LS) and Logical Reasoning (LR) — and no negative marking.

How many sections and questions are there?
There are 3 sections, each with 36 questions (108 questions total). Section time limits: QA — 52 mins, LS — 28 mins, LR — 40 mins. Total test time = 120 minutes.

How is NMAT scored?
Each section is scored from 12–120. The overall score ranges from 36–360. Because NMAT is adaptive, the score reflects the difficulty level you reached rather than a simple tally of correct answers.

Can I change an answer or go back to previous questions?
No. Once you submit an answer in NMAT you cannot change or revisit it. The next question’s difficulty depends on your previous responses.

Is there negative marking or penalty for skipping questions?
There is no negative marking for wrong answers. However, leaving a question unanswered is penalised (so you should attempt every question).

How many times can I take NMAT?
You may appear up to three times in the testing window. Note: some colleges accept only the first valid attempt — check individual college policies before reattempting.

Which colleges accept NMAT scores?
NMAT scores are accepted by many B-schools including NMIMS (all campuses), Xavier University Bhubaneswar (MBA-HR), Great Lakes, TAPMI, KJ Somaiya, IFMR (Krea), SNU Delhi NCR, ICFAI IBS, SDA Bocconi Asia Center, SOIL and others. Always confirm with the school for the latest list.

Do all colleges consider the best of multiple attempts?
No. Policies vary by institute. For example, NMIMS historically accepts only the first attempt. Always verify each institute’s policy before planning reattempts.

What is the NMAT syllabus?
Quantitative Skills: Arithmetic, Algebra, Data Interpretation, Data Sufficiency, P&C/Probability, Number system, Sequences & Series, Logarithms, etc.

Language Skills: Reading comprehension, parajumbles, analogies, grammar/error spotting, sentence completion and contextual vocabulary.

Logical Reasoning: Critical reasoning, Venn diagrams, puzzles, input-output, family tree, coding-decoding, series, directions.

What are typical NMAT cutoffs?
Cutoffs vary by year and institute. Indicative ranges (from recent cycles) show overall cutoffs for top schools from ~209 up to 230+. Sectional expectations vary by campus and year — aim for higher scores to be safe. (Check the specific school’s admission notice for exact cutoffs.)

When will I get my score?
An unofficial score is displayed immediately after the test. The official scorecard is typically emailed within ~24 hours.

What should I carry to the test centre?
Printed admit card and the same valid, non-expired Photo ID whose details were used in registration. Your photo on the admit card must be clear and match the Photo ID. Arrive at least 45 minutes before your slot.

Can I choose the order of sections?
Yes — you choose the order of the three sections before starting the test. Once selected, the sequence cannot be changed.

Are breaks allowed during the test?
No breaks are permitted during the exam session.

What if I face technical issues during the exam?
Report any test delivery issues immediately to the NMAT support channels (see below). They must be reported within the time window specified by the test authorities.

Who do I contact for support or to report an issue?
NMAT help/support: nmatsupport@gmac.com

Issue reporting during the exam / test delivery problems: nmatbygmacsupport@u-next.com

Any test-taking strategy tips?
Because NMAT is adaptive and you cannot revisit answers, focus on accuracy and consistent pacing per section. Attempt every question (to avoid unanswered penalties) and choose a section order that suits your strengths.

Where can I send my NMAT score?
During registration you can select recipient programs/schools to which GMAC will send your NMAT score. Confirm each school’s submission and attempt-acceptance policy when applying.
