Verbal Reasoning23 Questions45 Minutes
Data Insights20 Questions45 Minutes

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a computer-adaptive test (CAT), meaning the difficulty level of the exam adjusts in real-time based on the test taker’s performance. As you progress through the test, the difficulty of the questions changes depending on how well you’re doing: if you answer a question correctly, the next one will generally be more difficult; if you answer incorrectly, the following question will typically be easier. This adaptive nature allows the test to more accurately assess your ability level.

The GMAT exam consists of four sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights, and Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections are each scored on a scale of 6 to 90, and together they contribute to the Total Score, which ranges from 205 to 805 in 10-point increments. The Data Insights section is scored separately on a scale of 60 to 90, while the AWA section is graded on a scale of 0 to 6 in half-point intervals. If any section is left unanswered, a No Score (NS) will be reported.

Official GMAT scores are typically available within 3 to 5 business days after the test date. Once released, you’ll receive an email notification from GMAC, and at the same time, your official score reports will be sent to the business schools you selected on test day. The GMAT Official Score Report includes your personal and demographic details, test date, section-wise scores with percentile rankings, and the list of institutions you’ve chosen to receive your scores. While this report is primarily for your own reference, you can download and print a copy if needed. The version sent to business schools only includes the scores you’ve selected to share, without revealing unreported scores or the names of other institutions you may have applied to. GMAT scores remain valid for five years from the date of the exam.

At GradSquare Chennai, our offline classroom coaching goes beyond test preparation. We offer personalized score analysis sessions to help you understand your results and use them strategically for MBA admissions. Whether you’re aiming for top-tier business schools or building a competitive academic profile, our expert mentors in Chennai are here to support you with in-depth insights and tailored guidance every step of the way.

Best Time to Take the GMAT

At GradSquare’s GMAT classroom coaching center in Chennai, we help you not only master the exam but also strategically plan when to take it. Choosing the right time to attempt the GMAT is a vital part of your MIM or MBA application journey. Whether you’re a current undergraduate student or a working professional, good timing can significantly strengthen your admission prospects.

For Undergraduate Students

If you are currently pursuing your undergraduate degree and planning to apply to MIM, MBA or any other Master’s Program in Management abroad, we recommend taking the GMAT in your pre-final year, typically the third year of a four-year program. Attempting the exam during this period helps you avoid the academic pressure of your final year, while giving you a head start on your applications.

According to the Indian academic calendar, it is ideal to complete the GMAT before September of your final year. This ensures you’re well-prepared for Round 1 and Round 2 deadlines, which generally open between September and January for the following year’s intake. Applying early increases your chances of securing scholarships, fellowships, or assistantships, which are often offered on a rolling basis. Additionally, an early attempt gives you the flexibility to retake the exam if needed, without derailing your overall application plan.

For Working Professionals

If you are a working professional aiming to pursue an MBA or a master’s in management, careful planning is key. You should ideally complete the GMAT at least 2 to 3 months before starting your application process. This typically means taking the exam 12 to 15 months prior to your target intake.

For example, if you are aiming for a Fall 2026 intake, taking the GMAT by June or July 2025 will give you enough time to focus on crafting a strong Statement of Purpose (SOP), obtaining letters of recommendation, compiling academic documents, and selecting the right programs. Early preparation also allows for the possibility of a retake without affecting your application timeline.

At GradSquare Chennai, our in-person GMAT coaching doesn’t just prepare you academically, we provide personalized mentorship to help you align your test schedule with your career goals. With expert guidance and a structured plan, you’ll stay ahead in the admissions game.

When to Start GMAT Preparation?

The ideal time to begin preparing for the GMAT is about five to six months before your intended test date. At our Chennai coaching center, we recommend this timeframe to help you study systematically, become familiar with the exam format, and strengthen your skills across all sections – Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights, and Analytical Writing Assessment. Starting early allows you to develop a consistent study routine, deeply understand key concepts, and avoid the stress of last-minute preparation.

If you find certain areas challenging, such as quantitative problem-solving or verbal reasoning, it’s even more important to start your preparation sooner. For those who need to build a strong foundation in topics like algebra, geometry, critical reasoning, or reading comprehension, an early start provides enough time to reinforce these basics before moving on to more advanced GMAT content. This steady, paced approach prevents overwhelming cramming and makes learning more effective.

Preparing well in advance also helps reduce exam anxiety as the test date approaches. It gives you the opportunity to take full-length practice tests, carefully review your mistakes, and refine your test-taking strategies. Additionally, starting early provides flexibility to manage any unexpected personal or professional commitments without compromising your study plan.
