For IIMs & Other B-Schools
Mock Interviews | WAT Feedback | Group Discussions
A high CAT percentile opens the door, but it doesn’t guarantee an admission to the top B-schools. The GDPI WAT stage is where final selections are made, and this is often where even top scorers fall short. At this level, interview panels are not looking for scores, they are evaluating how you think, how clearly you communicate, how well you understand your academic background, and how aware you are of the world beyond textbooks.
Success in these rounds depends on preparation that is deliberate and well-directed. GradSquare’s GDPI WAT Preparation Program focuses on building exactly what selection panels value. With one-to-one mentoring, structured WAT practice, and realistic interview simulations, we help you refine your thought process and communicate with confidence. Our outcome-driven approach, backed by consistent results, ensures you walk into the interview room prepared, composed, and convincing. When the stakes are high, preparation makes the difference prepare with GradSquare.

Personalized GDPI WAT Preparation
Personal Interview Preparation (PI)
The IIM Personal Interview is not just a test of knowledge, it is an evaluation of who you are, how you think, and how clearly you can express yourself under pressure. GradSquare’s PI preparation is built to help you perform strongly across every area the panel values, from academic understanding and current affairs to self-awareness, career direction, and interpersonal maturity. Our training helps you respond thoughtfully, manage curveball questions, and communicate with clarity and composure.
A core part of the program is a series of high-intensity mock interviews modeled closely on actual IIM panels. These simulations are followed by detailed, practical feedback that focuses on sharpening your content, improving your body language, strengthening your reasoning, and enhancing overall delivery.
Your preparation is guided by senior mentors with extensive interview experience, Ajay Zener (IIM Ahmedabad Alumnus), Varun Krishnan (MS, University of Cincinnati), and Kushal Bohra (NMIMS Alumnus). Together, they bring over 15 years of mentoring experience and have coached more than 10,000 aspirants. Their structured approach and deep understanding of the selection process have consistently helped candidates convert calls from some of the most competitive IIMs.
Written Ability Test (WAT)
The Written Ability Test at the IIMs demands more than just good writing, it tests how effectively you can think, organize ideas, and express them under strict time limits. GradSquare’s WAT preparation is designed to help you develop these exact skills, enabling you to handle topics ranging from current affairs and societal challenges to abstract concepts and ethical questions with confidence.
Our approach emphasizes building a strong essay framework, sharpening argumentation, ensuring logical progression, and maintaining clarity and language accuracy throughout the response. With regular writing practice and individualized feedback from experienced mentors, you learn how to present your perspectives in a clear, persuasive, and structured manner—qualities that significantly influence final selection decisions.
Each week, you participate in focused WAT sessions that break down what IIM evaluators truly look for in a written response. Every session is followed by a carefully selected practice prompt, along with in-depth evaluation and actionable feedback, allowing you to steadily improve both your thinking process and written communication over time.

Advantage of Personalized GDPI WAT Preparation

IIM Mock Interviews
GradSquare’s Personal Interview preparation follows a highly personalized and methodical approach, led by Ajay Zener, an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus and a senior MBA mentor with years of interview coaching experience. From the very start, each student is supported through a guided preparation process that focuses on building depth, structure, and confidence.
The journey begins with a strategic orientation that helps you understand what IIM panels expect and how to prepare your responses effectively. Once your groundwork is complete, you move into your first mock interview, conducted by Ajay or a senior mentor. This session evaluates your readiness across key dimensions such as content quality, clarity of expression, composure, and overall interview presence. Subsequent mock interviews are intentionally designed to address weaknesses identified earlier, allowing for measurable improvement with each round.
The preparation framework ensures comprehensive coverage of all major IIM interview areas, including personal background, academic understanding, professional experience, social and business awareness, and current affairs. Mock interviews typically last between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the institutes you are preparing for, and are followed by precise, actionable feedback that clearly outlines how to strengthen your performance.
This structured, results-driven process is built to help you walk into the final IIM interview with confidence, consistency, and credibility.

IIM AWT-WAT Preparation
At GradSquare, IIM WAT/AWT preparation is led directly by Varun Krishnan, Founder of GradSquare and a highly regarded WAT/AWT mentor. The program follows a disciplined weekly format, with each session designed to strengthen how you think, organize ideas, and translate them into clear, persuasive writing.
Our methodology is rooted in one principle: strong WAT/AWT performance comes from deliberate practice backed by expert guidance. Regular writing exercises help you build structure and time control, while detailed mentor feedback pinpoints weaknesses in reasoning, flow, and expression—allowing for steady and measurable improvement.
The sessions cover a wide range of themes commonly tested by top B-schools, including current affairs, social and economic issues, business concepts, ethical situations, and abstract topics. Each class introduces a practical writing framework, followed by a take-home task. Your submission is then reviewed in depth, with personalized feedback focusing on content quality, organization, and clarity.
With WAT/AWT contributing a significant portion to the final IIM selection process, consistent performance is essential. GradSquare’s structured, feedback-intensive approach ensures your writing becomes sharper, more logical, and interview-panel ready—giving you a clear advantage at the final stage.

IIM Academic Interviews
GradSquare’s approach to IIM mock interviews goes far beyond routine practice sessions. Unlike standard coaching formats, our interviews are designed to be intense, domain-specific, and diagnostic in nature—focused on uncovering weaknesses and systematically working them out of your performance. The experience closely mirrors the depth, pressure, and unpredictability of actual IIM interview panels.
Each mock interview dives deeply into your academic background, regardless of your discipline. Whether you come from engineering, commerce, humanities, sciences, or interdisciplinary fields, you are rigorously tested on fundamentals, conceptual understanding, real-world application, and your ability to think clearly under pressure.
In addition, interviews are grounded in current business, economic, and policy developments, with questions driven by data and real statistics. This ensures that your answers are not only accurate but also relevant, analytical, and well-informed.
A key differentiator of GradSquare’s process is mentor specialization. Your mock interviews are conducted by mentors experienced in evaluating candidates from your academic domain. They understand common blind spots and recurring challenges, enabling them to provide precise, targeted guidance. As a result, when you finally sit in front of the IIM panel, you are prepared to handle depth, follow-up questioning, and high-pressure situations with confidence and control.
When Should You Start GDPI WAT Preparation?
The ideal time to start the GDPI WAT preparation process is immediately after the CAT response sheet is released in December. At this point, you can reasonably predict your percentile and assess your likelihood of receiving interview calls based on your overall profile.
IIM shortlisting is not driven by percentile alone. Candidates from the General category have received calls at percentiles in the low 90s depending on their academic background and work experience. For EWS, NC-OBC, and SC categories, the cutoff can be significantly lower, provided the profile is strong. Once you estimate your score using the response sheet, you will have clear visibility on whether your chances are realistic and if they are, early preparation becomes a decisive advantage.
The interview phase moves quickly. In recent admission cycles, some IIMs began their interview processes as early as the second week of January. This leaves a narrow preparation window, often less than a month for most candidates. Those who begin early are able to develop stronger answers, refine their thinking, and gain confidence through practice, while late starters struggle with time pressure. Starting your GDPI WAT preparation early allows you to enter the interview season prepared, composed, and competitive.

How are GDPI WAT Conducted?
The IIM selection process does not follow a single, uniform model. Different institutes adopt distinct admission structures to maintain autonomy while also managing the scale of applicants effectively.
The older IIMs, along with a few of the newer ones, conduct their WAT–PI processes independently. This allows them full control over evaluation criteria, interview style, and selection benchmarks, enabling each institute to assess candidates according to its specific academic philosophy and institutional priorities.
On the other hand, a set of five newer IIMs participates in the Common Admission Process (CAP). Under CAP, candidates appear for a single, centralized WAT–PI round, the scores of which are shared among the participating institutes. This system is designed to streamline admissions, reduce duplication, and make the process more efficient for both applicants and institutes.
In addition to CAP, another cluster of four newer IIMs follows the Joint Admission Process (JAP). Similar in structure, JAP also involves a consolidated WAT–PI evaluation, with participating institutes using the shared assessment outcomes as part of their final selection decisions.
Beyond these, IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu run a Supplementary Admission Process (SAP). SAP provides an additional opportunity for candidates who may not have converted seats through CAP, allowing these institutes to reassess strong profiles and fill remaining seats. This multi-layered admission framework ensures flexibility while giving deserving candidates multiple avenues to secure an IIM offer.

How are the GDPI WAT conducted?
IIM Personal Interview (PI)
The Personal Interview (PI) process at the IIMs differs significantly across institutes and programs, and understanding these nuances is crucial for effective preparation. Interviews for the newer IIMs under CAP and JAP typically last 10–15 minutes, while the older IIMs—IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, and Lucknow—often conduct more intensive interviews of 25–30 minutes.
The discussion generally revolves around your academic foundations, clarity of goals, self-awareness, current affairs, and social awareness. Panels are usually composed of 2–3 experienced IIM professors, and some institutes—such as IIM Mumbai—also include alumni interviewers to bring additional perspectives.
Most interviews are conducted offline at designated centres across India, though a few specialised programs may opt for an online format.
Given the competitive nature of these interviews, strong preparation is essential. Final selection ratios are extremely tight—approximately 1:4 in the older IIMs and 1:6 in the newer IIMs. A well-prepared candidate stands out immediately, making the difference between a shortlist and a final admit.
IIM Written Ability Test (WAT)
The Written Ability Test (WAT) is conducted by most IIMs as a key component of the final selection process, with the exception of a few institutes. IIM Ahmedabad conducts the AWT (Analytical Writing Test) instead of the traditional WAT.
The WAT typically lasts 15–25 minutes, during which you are given a topic and expected to produce a clear, structured and well-reasoned response within the time limit. WAT topics commonly cover current affairs, social issues, business news, public policy and broader social awareness themes, and are often argumentative in nature. Your writing is evaluated on clarity of thought, depth of knowledge, coherence, structure, and quality of analysis. The WAT carries 10–20% weightage in the final merit list.
The AWT at IIM Ahmedabad is fundamentally different. Instead of an open-topic essay, you are presented with a short case, scenario or situation, followed by pointed analytical questions. These questions test your ability to identify assumptions, draw logical inferences, critique arguments, and think critically under time pressure.
Mastering the WAT/AWT is crucial, as it demonstrates your analytical ability, communication skills, and depth of understanding.
GDPI WAT Preparation Timeline
You should start your GDPI WAT preparation early! The CAT 2025 scorecard is expected to be released between late December 2025 and early January 2026. Historically, CAT results have been announced as early as 22 December and never later than 10 January. The scorecard provides sectional and overall scaled scores along with percentile rankings, critical inputs used by the IIMs and top B-schools for shortlisting. Within 2–3 days of the result announcement, IIM interview shortlists begin to roll out, with the older IIMs typically releasing their lists first. Along with the shortlist, you will receive institute-specific forms to fill, often requiring essays or SOPs. For example, IIM Bangalore asks for a 600-word SOP, and other IIMs may require multiple short essays.
Interview rounds begin almost immediately. In recent years, IIM Rohtak and IIM Lucknow started interviews as early as 10 January, leaving candidates very little time to prepare. This is why starting your GDPI WAT preparation early, ideally even before the results are declared, is a strategic advantage that ensures you enter January’s interview season fully prepared and confident. The entire IIM interview process typically concludes by mid-April, and final admission offers start rolling out from April 15 onwards. Most IIM academic sessions commence in June or July, giving selected candidates ample time to plan.
This streamlined cycle, from CAT result to shortlist to interview to final admission, offers aspirants a clear roadmap. And those who start preparing early enjoy a decisive edge in the highly competitive GDPI WAT process.

Happy to share that I had a wonderful time at Gradsquare preparing for the CAT exam and GDPI process. As someone who was entirely new to this entire process, I was fortunate to have had such wonderful mentors at Gradsquare who guided me through each and every step of the way. Mentors at Gradsquare helped me identify my weaknesses and helped me find my own strategy that was best suited for my strengths. What stood out for me was Gradsquare's approach which was different from the conventional approach of other coaching centres of using long hours to conduct classes, which in my opinion really doesn't help much, however they never hesitated to take long hours to clear our doubts which according to me was the key instrument in helping me succeed. Also, the Gradsquare portal is super easy to handle and it really makes your prep easy to assess and follow.
